Gender Reveal Cake

There are few things I love to bake more than a gender reveal cake. Not only am I doing what I love, but I get to be a part of a huge moment for some really great couples! It can be a bit tricky to keep gender info on the DL - the last thing I would want is for someone (especially if they know me) to mindlessly flip through instagram stories and see me revealing their baby's gender to all of social media. But keeping a secret is so hard!

This particular gender reveal cake is BY FAR my favorite! One of my husband's former coworkers, Priyaank, reached out to me over social media with this unique request. He and his wife, Jyoti, wanted to share a gender reveal party with their friends and needed a cake but, like many stories I've heard before, there wasn't a single local bakery that could do it for them. I jumped at the opportunity and he sent some beautiful inspiration pictures of colorful Indian art/mehndi pattern themed cakes.

This couple had trusted a close friend with their gender results and through text she shared it with me -- A GIRL!

Now for the challenging part... designing a cake so that no one (not even my husband who I insisted wasn't allowed to know lol) could discover the gender before the couple. My go-to way of ensuring that is reaaaaalllly layering up on the buttercream in plain white before even decorating.

I like the effect of a solid color within the cake (think pink cake and pink buttercream) so I simply rimmed each cake layer around the edge with white buttercream, then filled the middles with pink so that no edges could reveal anything. Follow that with a generous crumb layer of white buttercream, chill for 30 min to an hour and you're ready to add your full color and design!

For this cake I covered the crumb layer in a bright orange and chilled again so my buttercream was stiff enough for me to draw my designs with a toothpick before piping. I may love free-handing cake designs but this was a new level of intricate for me.

The end result was gorgeous! My family joined the gender reveal party and for the first time I was able to see a couple rip into their bright pink cake and see their reactions which I LOVED. I can't wait to see more of these reactions in the future.
